Summer Mandala

Mandala – a Sanskrit word meaning “circle”; often, a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite. I am constantly awed and fascinated by the ubiquity and variety of spirals in nature. This image, composed of four natural mandalas, was initially inspired by the mushroom cap in the center. It is the parasol mushroom, Macrolepiota procera, a delicious and beautiful summer species. The Marigolds came from my tiny garden. On the perimeter are Velvet Leaf (a common farm field “weed”) seed pods and those wonderful spiraling Clematis fruits from a friend’s garden.
