Morels

Morel mushrooms are highly sought after, choice edibles. They appear in mid-May, often where they grew the previous year. At that time in the spring, several wildflowers are blooming in the woods, birds are mating, trees are leafing out, making a morel walk a most delightful experience. I have looked for them under apple trees in full bloom, the sound of bees providing an aural backdrop. In 2007, I found about 150, many of which I dried for the future. Spongey on the outside and hollow within, they have a wonderful flavor and texture. Their forms are quite variable, as this images shows. Unlike robins in that way.
There is a look-alike, the "false morel", that may not kill you, but make you wish that it had.
It's said...There are Old mushroom pickers and Bold mushroom pickers, but none who are both.
