Milkweed 2

Another take on the distressed plant described in "Milkweed 1", this showing the upper stalk. In a healthy milkweed, the leaves are flat and uniformly green, unlike the distorted ones shown here. The white spot on the stem is the milky sap that flowed out where I broke off a leaf. Milkweed, the food of choice for Monarch butterflly caterpillars, is distatseful to most other critters. When boiled, however, the unopened flower heads are a tasty vegetable. Go figure.
