Galls

I gathered these Goldenrod stalks on a December walk through a local meadow. Galls, those swellings, are created by the plant in response to a wasp egg that was deposited in the stem earlier in the summer. The larva grows inside the swelling and when it's ready, it chews a hole sufficiently large for it to escape. And find a mate. To make more galls.
A faint anvil's ring resonantes in this one. Many years ago, as a blacksmith, I created a composition in iron that bears a remarkable resmblance to this image. They hang adjacent to one another in my home.
