Birch Catkins

Emerging in early spring, before the tree leafs out, the catkins are the flowers of the birch. Following pollination, seeds form in profusion along each catkin. (Pussy willows are catkins, also.) These branches are from an ornamental variety on the Mt. Holyoke College campus.

I love the sense of movemnet here and the neagtive spaces that define the shapes.
